6 Steps On How To Install A Sink Pop-Up Drain Stopper
A pop-up drain stopper is a very useful yet a little feature in your sink. Whether you’re going to install a sink pop-up drain stopper for the first time, or are going to replace an old one, it’s important to have the right tools to get the job done right.
You can do the installation by yourself, but you can also call in a plumber from Shaul’s for professional assistance. To do it yourself, you will need the following tools and supplies.
- Pop-up drain stopper kit
- Pliers
- Plumber’s putty
- Bucket
- Rag
The Steps To Install A Sink Pop-Up Drain Stopper
After having the tools and supplies in place, you can now start the job by following these steps.
1. Prepare The Area
Start by removing any excess water from the sink, because once you remove the drain trap, you won’t want water falling on either you or the floor. You may also put a bucket or pot under the sink, just in case, to catch additional water.
2. Remove The Old Drain
The sections to the drain and the pop-up lift rod are to be found under the sink. Unscrew the rod off to clear it. Use your pliers then, to catch and loosen the nut of the lock near the underside of the sink. Move the drain assembly up and move it around to loosen it and be able to flow out any remaining water. Go back to the top of the sink and start removing the pop-up ring, which will then allow the drain assembly to come out of under the sink. The pop-up ring is part of the entire assembly in some existing systems and will have to be pulled up through the drain.
3. Install The New Drain Flange
Remove some old caulk or putty from the drain hole around them. Place plumber putty on top of the new flange all around the bottom of the chrome ring. Do not worry about having just the right amount; all that matters is to cover the underside. Some assemblies may have a rubber gasket, or you can use silicone sealant as well, but the best is the plumber putty job.
4. Prepare The Bottom Assembly
To achieve a good seal at the bottom of the sink, place putty on the rubber washer mounted on the bottom assembly. Then move the assembly up through the bottom of the tub, until the rubber gasket appears to be fully sealed. That is where you screw the top of the flange to the bottom drain assembly which now sticks up. Connect it but don’t worry that it’s still tight. Use the pliers to secure the nut of the lock located at the bottom. Clean up any excess putty which squeezes out between the ring and the sink surface with a rag or paper towel.
5. Install The Stopper
Place the stopper into the drain from the top and ensure that the hole faces the back of the sink. Heading back to the bottom, take the nut with the ball inside it and thread it into the pipe. Push the rod to make sure the drain moves up and down. When it does work well, tighten the nut. If not, the stopper would need to be moved until it catches the rod.
6. Position The Pop-Up Lever
Simply feed the lever into the sink’s hole, connecting the vertical lever to the horizontal bar. The height of the pop-up can be adjusted by moving the extension pin up or down to a different slot.
